Preparing for fall travels

I know, here we are in the dog days of summer (90 degrees yesterday) and I'm posting a fall photo... Why? ..... well read on...

I was reading the two car guys in the paper and something they said which is good comon sense at all times but more so now, made me want to post a version of it here...

Plan your trip in a logical order to save on gas...

If you are like me and you plan for capturing pictures of the foliage (not that far away), then you need to be out there at dawn or dusk (late afternoon 4PM on). This means that the rest of the day in the middle should be planned for other attractions... Which is why when someone writes to my on the Yankee Foliage forum and they tell me that they only come only for the colors, I try to explain to them that they will be getting bored quickly... I mean the colors are wonderful but driving from tree to tree or scene to scene can get boring...

My day goes something like this... After I go out (O-dark thirty) and find my morning colors to shoot we (we = Lisa and I) plan on breakfast at a local diner. Then if I'm near a town we plan to explore the town, if we're near the shore we might walk the beach. I say we since Lisa goes with me most times unless I'm out driving during the week and she's working.
Anyway Lisa gets the map books out and she scours the pages for things we've never seen before to occupy the middle of the day when the light isn't great.. If your map book doesn't have a POI (points of interest) then check the local town for brochures... This isn't to say you shouldn't take pictures during this time (10AM-4PM) but the quality of the light isn't as good as it will be earlier in the morning or later in the afternoon.

So we explore, find a little general store, a museum of firefighter equipment, something.. Anything :-)... And when the light is right she turns the decision on where to go over to me and we start scouting new photographic opportunities.
I try to have a location in mind but sometimes (most times) I will spend my gas at this time just looking for good vantage points with ponds for reflections and maybe an old building in the reflection... It's amazing how hard it is to find a scene with all these elements... The picture above is the one time I found all the elements in one shot... And no I didn't photoshop the building there... (as seen on my website)

Let me know if you want to know where this is... :-) This is not a secret location and is on every map for New Hampshire... If you can guess where it is, post it in the comments and I'll pick the first commenter who gets it right and send them one of my photogreeting cards with this pic on it...

Well this is supposed to be about maximizing milage and not a how too take good fall pictures... plus I have work to do..

That photo is really incredible!
I've never seen one quite like that with the lake so clearly reflecting the fall colors of the trees. And no photoshop, really? Amazing and nice!

This was shot with film (kodak pro 200 film) in 2003 and was the last time I really shot film... The reason I can tell is there is a hair or scratch that I did not clone out. I could do this after the fact but I haven't seen the need..
The digital shots that I shot side by side with this have some saturation added to equal the film.

LOL, you spelled "foliage" wrong in the Yankeefoliage link, and it takes you to the wrong page. Figured it out though, cool site. My Wife is dying to get out to the East coast one year to see the colors. The best we have seen out here is Sedona, AZ.

Great photo! This would be a beautiful canvas, and would be even cooler on metallic paper!

Thanks SD.. I should have checked my link when I published it. There is a reason that I love auto focusing cameras... :-)
I've fixed the typo and it now takes you over to the Yankee site. I only work for them in the fall and you can reach me here or there for the next few months. Log into the foliage forum and let us know when you're arriving and then when you get home give us feedback on how the trip went. We have several folks from Texas, Arizona and points west so you should feel at home...
